Laneway Housing Update

Just a real quick update from Helen O’Toole on the hot topic that is hydro.

BC HYDRO BACKS DOWN FROM HIGH CONNECTION FEE FOR LANEWAY HOUSING

- They are now going to allow the overhead/upgrade option (i.e. the cheaper option) where clearances and capacity make it feasible
- In some cases (i.e. corner lots) we can simply upgrade the main panel and meter at the house
- In many cases we’ll be able to do an overhead connection to a new panel on the lane house
- In some specific cases they may still have to do an underground connection if the total loading for that block is too high

Can you say “Bowing to public pressure”? Fantastic news for those who were looking to build a laneway house but were getting scared off by Hydro’s reportedly exorbitant connection charges.

This is definately good news as we, Kooney Homes Ltd, are also in the process of working with homeowners to build Laneway Houses for them. I was also told by someone at BC Hydro that for a fee/deposit, they will actually quote the cost to supply power to a LWH.

I’v heard the newest update for the laneway house is that there are 11 applications approved! Is this true?
