The Shangri-La towers over the city. You cannot escape its gaze nor deny its presence. What started as a dream more than a few years ago has simply surpassed all expectations as reaches up into the sky with its sixty one floors. By far the tallest of all buildings in Vancouver, it will also be the most luxurious of all addresses. Or that was the plan, at least. Where the famous Shangri-La Hotel was once bold in its decision to place its first North American imprint in Vancouver it is now to be challenged by the Ritz Carleton (its across the street neighbour to be), the Hotel Vancouver (down the block neighbour) as well as Fairmont Pacific Rim and the soon to complete Raffles. All big names in truly indulging those with very high standards. Shangri-La can be well assured that they will be the tallest but will have some competition in the pampering department.
Brought to fruition by only those who you would say have a stellar reputation the project is headed by Peterson Investment Group and Westbank Projects Corp. and is being constructed by Ledcor. You cannot overemphasize the scale of this development and hats off to all involved for both the speed and apparent quality that is being built into it. The architectural design came from the incomparable James KM Cheng Architects who are responsible for many of Vancouver’s landmark buildings.
The first several floors will be occupied by 120 Shangri-La hotel suites. The next several floors are 227 Live/Work spaces. Following those will be the 66 highly sought after residential skyhomes topped by the most impressively located penthouse unit perhaps in North America. Prices for such units start in the mid $4 million range. There are several units available on assignment and one of the Penthouses is available as well.
To compliment the site a full restoration of the Coastal Church was carried out and completed in 2006. Also there is a proposed Vancouver Art Gallery managed sculpture garden.
