TV Towers - 233 Robson and 788 Hamilton - Downtown
The old CBC Studios that take up a full block next to the iconic Central Branch of the Vancouver Public Library are getting some new neighbours. Economic woes for the CBC have got their creative juices flowing when it comes to raising cash and what better way than to sell off some prime real estate? Not only will Concord Pacific build two beautiful towers and a series of townhomes on what was an underutilized private parking lot but they will also be building a new and much improved studio for the CBC.
As with much of Vancouver’s downtown core the location is supreme. Not only is it across from the previously mentioned library (was it modeled after the coliseum or a shellfish as the architect has claimed?) but it also sits squarely in the middle of the Queen Elizabeth theatre, GM Place, BC Place, Yaletown, the Centre for the Performing Arts, and will have Raffles as an across the street neighbour.
Amenities within the towers will include “The Network” Health Club featuring a yoga/pilates studio, exercise facility, steam room, sauna, and for a bit more relaxation a sports lounge to catch the games on the big screen or challenge your friends to a friendly match of foosball, air hockey (I dare you to take me on), or billiards. There will also be the ubiquitous meeting room available to residents.
Being Concord Pacific you will notice that there are no “4″s in the building. No fourth floor, no units ending in a “4″. Just as Western culture shuns 13’s, the superstitious Chinese shun “4″. It’s a bad luck number in with the pronunciation “si” (as in “sir” without the r) which could mean “4″ or “death”. You wouldn’t want to live in unit “Death O Death”, would you?
Interior designs within the suites will be very modern contemporary with brilliant white cabinetry, polished chrome hardware, brushed stainless steel countertops, mosaic tiled backsplashes, porcelain tiled floors in the kitchen and bathrooms, all stainless steel appliances, and the much requested laminate flooring.
If you would like to follow along with the construction the CBC has a webcam for you.
The design of the buildings fall to Walter Francl Architecture Inc. and Hotson Bakker Boniface Haden under the development guidance of the ever active Concord Pacific Developments.
